Personal comment:
This representative work by Vedder, conveys to me that the troubled woman is in a state of self-inspection as to her sinful condition, because the angel of light is prompting her conscience. The woman is therefore on the threshold of decision regarding her future course of life. She does not show that she is in the light of understanding.
I believe the man in the picture is meant to represent those men who seek to impress others as to having a sagelike appearance of wisdom, but who do not enlighten womankind as to true understanding of their obligations to God and humankind. Listening to unenlightened false prophets, who throughout the generations have exhibited an appearance of wisdom in word, but have proved false to the power of holiness themselves, has worked at drawing people away from God.
